G2 – Giudecca Renaissance Experience
The tour considers the visit of two of the most impressive religious buildings during the Renaissance period. The guided walk starts by the vaporetto stop named Palanca (vaporetto n° 2) and ends by San Giorgio Maggiore Church, located on the same named island. You will visit the first famous votive temple of the city, built to memorialize the end of the terrible plague in 1575 by the celebrated architect Andrea Palladio. The church faces the water of the Giudecca channel and is the destination of the pilgrimage every July. Its architectural magnificence is respectful of the poverty vow that distinguishes the Franciscan friars’ community in charge of the Basilica since its foundation. The second part of the tour suggests the visit of the Temple of San Giorgio Maggiore, after a quick passage on board a vaporetto to reach another island. The Island of San Giorgio is now the seat of Giorgio Cini Foundation. This is an important and prestigious European cultural focal point. It is located in enchanting places that used to host the powerful Benedictine monastery. The façade of the Palladian Basilica acts as a witness to the cultural importance reached throughout the centuries by the monastery. You cannot miss the visit of the church in order to admire the constructive philosophy of the architect and the precious works of art preserved in it. From this position you will be delighted to see the unforgettable view of Piazza San Marco… for the bravest/adventurous it is possible to “climb up” to the top of the famous bell tower.
